Which radio codes are free
For most makes, the code isn't stored anywhere. It's calculated from the serial number using a set of rules built into the radio. If you know the rules, you can work the code out. We do, so we give those codes away.

Which ones are not free, and why
Nissan, Volkswagen and SEAT radios are different. The code isn't calculated from the serial. It's a random number picked when the radio was built, and it only exists in the manufacturer's database. Nobody can generate it. Not us, not anyone.
The same goes for the T00AM and QN families of Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge radios. For those we buy the code in and sell it at $5. It isn't free anywhere, so if a site says otherwise, be careful.

Why some serials go to the desk
A few serial types can't be decoded by the site on its own. Ford BP, C7 and TravelPilot serials, all Bosch, BMW and Iveco serials, and Renault or Dacia lookups from the VIN need a person to look at them.
Those still come free or for $5. The only difference is that both options take up to 24 hours, because someone at our decoding desk does the work by hand. We'll tell you before you choose so there are no surprises.
What to be careful of
Search for free radio codes and you'll find pages that promise a generator, then ask you to install a program, fill in a survey, or hand over a card number to unlock the result. Those pages don't decode radios. They collect installs and survey clicks.
A real free code works like ours. You type the serial, the site checks it, and the code comes by email. Nothing to download. No survey. No card for the free option. If a site asks for any of those before it shows you anything, close the tab.
What you need
Just the serial number, and an email address to send the code to. The serial is on a label on the radio's casing, or shown on the screen when you hold down certain preset buttons. Our find your serial guide shows both, make by make.
You don't need the car's registration, the logbook, or proof of ownership. For Renault and Dacia only, the VIN can be used instead of the serial.
What happens after

Is the free code the same as the one a dealer would give me?
Yes. There's only one code for a given serial. A dealer looks it up or calculates it the same way we do. The radio doesn't know or care where the code came from.
