Most Civics have a Honda-branded unit made by Panasonic, Alpine or Pioneer, and they all lock the same way. With the ignition on and CODE on the screen, hold presets 1 and 6 and the serial appears, sometimes as a U half and an L half. Older Civics have the serial on a label on the casing instead. Either way it is worked out on the spot.

Where the serial is
Turn the ignition on and switch the radio on, so the display shows CODE. Now press and hold presets 1 and 6 together. After a few seconds the screen shows the serial, sometimes split across two screens with a U and an L part. Older radios don't do this trick, so the serial is on a label on the side of the unit or on a sticker in the glovebox.
How to enter the code
- 1Turn the radio on; the display shows CODE.
- 2Type the five digits using presets 1 to 6, one press per digit.
- 3The radio unlocks as soon as the last digit goes in.
- 4If it shows ERR E, switch the ignition off for an hour and try once more.

What does a Civic radio show when I hold 1 and 6?
The serial, either as one line or as two halves starting U and L. Write both halves down in that order, without the letters, and send the lot.
My Civic radio says ERR-E. Have I broken it?
No. It has had ten wrong tries and is sulking. Switch the ignition off, leave it, then switch on again and CODE comes back. Then enter the right code.
Is the Civic code four or five digits?
Usually five, sometimes four on older units. Enter each digit with the matching preset and the radio plays after the last one.
