Most Meganes have a Renault unit made by Philips or Continental, the Update List, Tuner List, Radiosat or Carminat, and later ones the R-Link or Radio Connect. The label on the casing shows a precode of one letter and three digits, or a part number starting 8200 or 2811 that ends in the precode. The VIN works for an original radio, but VIN lookups go to our desk and take 24 hours either way.

Where the serial is
The precode is on a white label stuck to the side or top of the radio. Look for a short code like K307 or K205, often the last four characters of a longer number such as 281164920RTK307. Some newer units show the precode on screen when you hold 1 and 6. No label and no screen? Switch the box to VIN and type the 17 characters from your windscreen plate or V5C.
How to enter the code
- 1Turn the radio on; the display shows CODE or 0000.
- 2Press preset 1 until the first digit is right, then 2, 3 and 4 for the others.
- 3Press and hold preset 6 until the radio beeps or the display changes.
- 4If it refuses, switch off, wait a minute and enter it again slowly.

Does a Megane with sat nav need a code?
The Carminat units usually do, and the code comes from the precode on the label just like the plain radio. The later R-Link locks to the car instead and rarely asks.
